Dental Crowns

You bite down on something hard and break a tooth, or your dentist finds a tooth weakened by a cavity — you may need a dental crown. The skilled dentists at My Mouth Dental/My Kidz Mouth Dental in Rowlett, TX, can restore damaged teeth using customized dental crowns. Could a porcelain dental crown restore your compromised natural tooth and complete your smile?

A Dental Crown Can Restore Your Smile

You could see amazing cosmetic results like this after your dentist restores your damaged tooth with a beautiful porcelain dental crown. Contact our Rowlett, TX, practice for a consultation to see if a crown is the treatment you need to complete your smile.

7 Benefits of Dental Crowns

Porcelain crowns placed by our dental team, Drs. José Montoya and Ashley Ramsey can provide many advantages to our Rowlett, TX, patients:

Protection

A crown can stop a weakened or cracked tooth from breaking apart.

Restoration

A crown can restore the form and function of a tooth that is worn down, broken, or has suffered decay.

Dental Bridge Support

Crowns on either side of an artificial tooth can hold a dental bridge in place.

Restore a Dental Implant

A crown can be attached to a dental implant. This is the most effective way to replace a missing tooth or teeth.

Complete a Root Canal

Your dentist may perform a root canal to clean out an infected tooth. A crown can seal the tooth to protect it.

Cosmetic Improvement

A crown can be used to improve the look of a severely discolored tooth that does not respond to whitening treatments.

Long-Lasting Investment

With proper brushing and flossing, along with regular dental exams, your dental crown can last up to 15 years or more.

Can My Child Receive a Dental Crown?

Yes. When cavities or fractures are found in a young child's teeth, Dr. Ramsey, our board-certified pediatric dentist, can remove the damaged tissue during a virtually painless procedure. We will first recommend dental fillings but in some cases, they might need a stainless steel dental crown. A white covering helps steel dental crowns blend in with the child's natural teeth.

A Look at the Dental Crown Procedure

Patients feel little to no discomfort during this treatment thanks to a numbing local anesthetic. Our Rowlett, TX, dentistry also offers safe, gentle sedation to patients who feel anxious about treatment.

First off, it’s been 10+ years since my husband or I have been to the dentist. That being said, the staff was encouraging, ready to teach and judgment free. Myself, my husband and my 3 kids definitely have a dental home.

First Appointment

After a numbing anesthetic has taken effect, your dentist will reshape the affected tooth by removing damaged or decayed tissue. Next, a precise impression will be made of your tooth.

Crown Creation

This impression will be sent to our trusted partner dental lab, located in Garland, TX. There, dental artisans will create your crown to your dentist's strict specifications. Color matching of the crown to your existing teeth is done at no charge to you.

Your Temporary Crown

A temporary crown will be created in our office to wear until your permanent crown is ready, which will be in about two to three weeks. This will help you chew, but it is best to avoid sticky or hard foods that might pull the temporary crown out or break it. Contact us if that happens.

Second Appointment

After your permanent crown arrives, you'll come back for the placement. Your dentist will remove your temporary crown and test your permanent crown to make sure it looks and fits perfectly. Once satisfied, your dentist will securely bond your permanent crown in place. Now get on out there and show Rowlett your completed smile!

Implant-Supported Dental Crowns A Single Tooth Replacement Solution

Crowns aren't only used to restore natural teeth. They can also be attached to dental implants to replace a single lost tooth. Implants are threaded posts surgically placed in the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots. They can support many forms of restorations, from bridges to dentures and, yes, dental crowns. An implant-supported crown looks and functions just like a natural tooth, and unlike a traditional dental bridge, it doesn't require any modifications to healthy teeth. Because they replace the entire tooth structure from root to chewing surface, implant-supported crowns are a highly recommended dentistry solution for qualified patients. At our Rowlett, TX, practice, Dr. José Montoya has extensive training in dental implants and has been placing them for over 10 years.

Caring for Your Dental Crown

With proper care, your dental crown can last for 15 years or longer. Follow these tips to experience the best benefits of your dental crown for years to come:

Avoid Sticky and Hard Foods

Hard, crunchy, and sticky foods have the potential to dislodge or damage your crown, especially at first. Eat these only in moderation, and avoid chewing them with your crown.

Don't Chew Hard Objects

Though dental porcelain is very durable, it's not indestructible. Chewing on ice, pen caps, and other hard objects can chip, crack, or break your crown. Kick this bad habit to keep your crown in top shape.

Use a Night Guard If Needed

Teeth grinding (bruxism) can damage your crown, not to mention your natural teeth. Patients who suffer from nighttime teeth grinding can wear a night guard while they sleep to help protect their teeth.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush that won't scratch the porcelain, and floss daily using a front-to-back motion (instead of up and down) to avoid dislodging your crown.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Visit the dentist twice a year for routine cleanings. This ensures hard-to-reach areas where the gum meets the tooth are cleaned thoroughly, and allows your dentist to spot any problems with your crown before they progress.
